Reducing and preventing food waste

This idea got 3,269 votes and will receive a one-time investment of $600,000.

The Government of Ontario will determine how projects are implemented; which may not be as described in the original submission. Food production uses a lot of energy. In order to reduce our global footprint, and reduce food waste I propose we study the possibility of banning supermarkets/ food factories from destroying/ throwing away unsold food/ "not attractive" food/ food close to its expiry date.

While much of Ontario is connected to broadband access, there are many small, rural and Indigenous communities that do not have equitable access to the Internet and digital resources. Ontarians who live in small, rural communities are limited by their location: they are unable to use the Internet to collaborate with others, research through online learning, gain tech-based skills, and participate in distance education programs.

Libraries present a unique and affordable opportunity to provide communities with Internet access at home and in public libraries.

So essentially what this is its an account/physical card that is made under someone using perhaps an SIN number or some government issued ID. Once you login you can submit and import information from you dentist/pharmacist/doctor/private surgeon/ chiropractor... or anyone that has information about your health information. This login will be useful to collect all the data about your health in one place so if you visit a new country or just a new healthcare professional across province or borders they will have all your information and can make the best diagnosis.

Feeding Northern Communities

Created on November 22, 2016 by unexia.  8 comments

I want Ontario to spend over $250,000 to fund a pilot about growing food in order to strengthen reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Create indoor farms in northern Indigenous communities

This idea was selected for voting but was not one of the top 3 projects.

This idea received 1,970 votes.

To install two container farming systems (or indoor farms) in Northern Indigenous Communities to help alleviate the cost of fresh food while creating food independence and jobs for locals.

The farms allow people to grow food all-year round and can grow fresh lettuce, kale, cucumbers, herbs, spinach and many more plants.

The farms can produce income for the farmer OR can be a centrally managed community garden where everyone shares in the abundance of food growth.

Indigenous Teachers Program

Created on December 9, 2016 by eweidl.  1 comment

I want Ontario to spend over $250,000 to fund a pilot about increasing the number of young indigenous teachers on reserves in order to help students achieve their full potential.

Help Indigenous youth get teaching degrees and teach on reserve

This idea was selected for voting but was not one of the top 3 projects.

This idea received 1,895 votes.

This would be implemented through an incentive program for young aboriginal adults to get a teaching degree and then teach on a reserve. They would receive grant money to do so and would not have to worry about paying for their education, as long as they took placements on a reserve in Ontario. This program would only be open to young aboriginal adults in Canada.

here is an idea: This is kind of my idea for some environmental initiative: It's a small one; but I think it would be effective. Planting more dreams. Why not have a day or a week (at least) dedicated to planting a tree? Imagine if this was put into practice and Canadians nationwide. were encouraged to plant at least one tree. I mean: we have Earth Hour. Wouldn't something like this be more effective? What if; as part of the Canadian educational curriculum; kids, starting in grade 1 or 2; were sent out to nature reserves, to plant more trees.

Students can Save Lives

I want Ontario to spend an undetermined amount to fund a pilot about training Ontario high school students to save lives in order to help students achieve their full potential.

Use community service hours to teach life saving skills to high school students

This idea was selected for voting but was not one of the top 3 projects.

Cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in Canada. People who experience an arrest have a 2 to 3 times greater chance of survival if they receive CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and/or the application of an AED (automated external defibrillator ) within minutes of the event: and the sooner the better. It can often take five minutes or longer depending on location once 911 is called for first responders to arrive. For every minute after a cardiac arrest that a person goes without CPR or defibrillation, they lose 10% of their chance of survival.

Internship Marketplace

I want Ontario to spend $50,000 - 250,000 to fund a digital service about connecting small businesses with potential interns in order to support Ontario’s small businesses.

For over a decade, I’ve managed a small business in Ontario – an online magazine. I’ve often wished for the ability to find a paid intern from a journalism school, but there’s currently no central way to do this. Business owners have to search school by school, and small businesses often run into barriers.

I believe Ontario should create a digital service where post-secondary students can register their area of specialty, school, and program, and business owners can post openings and search for suitable candidates to interview.
